What is the theory test and how to pass it?

About the theory test

The theory test, also known as the knowledge test, is a mandatory step to get a driving license in Sweden. The test is conducted at Trafikverket and tests your knowledge of traffic rules, traffic safety, environment, vehicle knowledge, and personal prerequisites.

Test layout: You get 70 questions and have 50 minutes to answer. Of these, 65 are score-giving questions – you need at least 52 correct answers to pass, which corresponds to 80% correct.

The theory test costs SEK 325 at Trafikverket (2026) and can be booked via their service mittkorkort.se or by phone at 0771-14 15 16.

How to prepare

The best way to pass the theory test on the first try is to practice regularly. Focus especially on areas where you feel unsure. Traffic rules constitute the largest part of the test with 32 questions.

  • Take at least 5 complete practice tests before booking
  • Practice daily for 2-3 weeks before the test
  • Focus extra on road signs and priority rules
  • Read the explanations after every incorrect answer
